Demographics

Fleetwood is a town centre community in Surrey, British Columbia, that is named in honor of Lance Corporal Arthur Thomas Fleetwood, an officer who served in World War I. L.Cpl. Fleetwood is memorialized with a statue outside of the Community Centre and Library, dedicated in 2008.

Fleetwood Community Association

In 1923, the Fleetwood Community Association formed and ever since has played a major role in community development activities. Since the 1930s, the Fleetwood Community Hall has been the hub of community social activity, and the Association began hosting the Fleetwood Festival in 1998. This event is a celebration of the spirit of Fleetwood, of its wellness, environment and heritage.

Diversity and Population

As a part of Surrey, Fleetwood is diverse, with over 50% of the regional population being classified as minorities, including South Asian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Black, Latin American, Arabic, Southeast and West Asian, Japanese, and native Aboriginal groups. The total population of the region totals over 50,000 residents.

Economics

The median income for a family in this area is nearly $80,000, higher than the overall British Columbia median of nearly $72,000 and the national median of almost $75,000. The average family income is almost $87,000 per year. Almost 30% of homes in the region have an income in the six figure range.

Crime

Crime in the area is below the national average and recent initiatives like local Fleetwood Safety Tours have begun to have an impact, and figures are expected to drop further as a result. Neighborhood Safety Campaigns are another important initiative that mobilizes communities to address crime and build safety in the communities.

Religion

The majority of the population in the area practices Christianity, with nearly half of the population identifying as a member of the Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox or other Christian branch. Behind Christians are Sikhs (and Hindus) at over 16% of the population, and roughly a quarter of residents claim no affiliation with a religious organization.

Environment and Climate

The surrounding environment of Fleetwood is essentially an urban sprawl. Fleetwood is a residential family-oriented community with light industry and a shopping district. The region consists mostly of low hills, and boasts a typical Pacific-Northwest climate with mild and sunny summers and cool autumns, but rainy and wet winter and spring seasons.

Education

The area is part of the School District 36 Surrey, the largest public school district in British Columbia, and is served by Fleetwood Park Secondary School. Nearly 25% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree, close to the national average. Almost half of all residents possess jobs in the managerial or professional sectors, also very near the national average.

Amenities

The town provides many amenities to residents, including the Fleetwood Library, Fleetwood Community Center, the Surrey Sports and Leisure Center and Francis Park and its adjacent walking parkas well as Tynehead provincial park.
